Julia Award Winners at SC24: The Julia community was well-represented among award winners at SC24 in Atlanta November 16-22.

    • Dr. William Moses Receives Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award: Dr. William Moses, longtime collaborator with the MIT Julia Lab and developer of the Enzyme automatic differentiation engine used heavily throughout the Julia ecosystem, received the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award for best doctoral dissertation in high performance computing for his work on Enzyme. The dissertation is titled Supercharging Programming through Compiler Technology.  The award was presented by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group on High Performance Computing (SIGHPC). More information is available here.
  • Best Paper - Integrating ORNL’s HPC and Neutron Facilities with a Performance-Portable CPU/GPU Ecosystem:  The Extreme-Scale Experiment-in-the-Loop Computing (XLOOP) Program Committee selected Integrating ORNL’s HPC and Neutron Facilities with a Performance-Portable CPU/GPU Ecosystem for the Best Paper Award. More information is available here.

SC24 also featured a Julia tutorial on the Julia Language for Productive High Performance Computing and a Birds of a Feather session on Julia for HPC.

JuliaEO - Earth Observation Using Julia January 6-10 (Terceira, Azores): The JuliaEO Global Workshop 2025 features surrogates of climate models developed in conjunction with the Julia community, along with connections of data science and mapping groups for satellite data. “The JuliaEO Global Workshop 2025, co-organized by the AIR Centre and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), will take place from January 6-10 in a hybrid format, hosted both in Terceira Island (Azores) and online. This workshop is designed to enhance the computer programming skills of professionals working in Earth Observation. To stimulate collaboration beyond the training, the complete workshop will be held in person. However, due to the high level of interest, remote participation will also be possible. Remote attendees will be able to watch the sessions live, and active participation will be possible but limited to text chat. The topics covered include acquisition, processing, visualization, and classification of Earth Observation data, using the Julia programming language. The training workshop will emphasize practical activities including the use of datasets, libraries/packages, automated workflows, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and classification algorithms. Theory-oriented sessions will introduce the concepts and hands-on activities.” Click here to access the full program.

Solving Inverse Problems and Scientific Machine Learning (SciML) at Geilo Winter School (Norway): Geilo Winter School takes place in Geilo, Norway January 19-24. Dr. Chris Rackauckas (JuliaHub VP of Modeling and Simulation) leads a workshop on Solving Inverse Problems with Julia’s SciML. Click here for more information.

JuliaHub Participates in Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)’s Automating Scientific Knowledge Extraction and Modeling (ASKEM) Program: Innosphere Ventures hosted Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)’s Automating Scientific Knowledge Extraction and Modeling (ASKEM) program last week. “With a major initial use case in climate modeling, ASKEM has the potential to revolutionize scientific modeling. ‘The way we have previously built models and connected them to data was very bespoke,’ explained Chris Rackauckas from MIT/JuliaHub, ‘Now that models are everywhere, we have to get more efficient at connecting them with data. Once we can do this, experts in all fields will be able to access the power of high-fidelity modeling.’”
